More than 4800 people have signed a petition calling for koalas to be introduced to New Zealand in the wake of devastating wildfires in Australia, but experts say there are other ways to support the stricken species.

Millions of animals have been impacted by the wildfires currently raging across the continent and there are concerns for how the remaining ones will manage given the loss of vegetation.

A volcano near the Philippines capital has spewed ash up to 15km into the sky, prompting thousands of people to be evacuated and flights to be cancelled.

Taal volcano, one of the country's most active, is in the middle of a lake about 70km south of Manila's centre.
