The signing of an initial trade deal will roll back some tariffs and increase the amount China buys from the US, particularly in agricultural products.

New Zealand is currently the largest foreign supplier of agricultural products to China.

Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters has defended the decision to keep New Zealand troops in Iraq, saying New Zealand won't be "cutting and running" in the face of heightening conflict.

Tensions in the region reached boiling point this month, beginning with the death of Iranian general Qassem Soleimani and Iran's subsequent targeting of two US bases in Iraq with ballistic missiles.

Water restrictions are being put in place around the country as the dry summer weather begins to bite.

In parts of the Far North, people cannot use garden hoses, sprinklers or irrigation devices. Water blasting and filling swimming pools are banned.
