A Canadian Naval frigate is en route to New Zealand and as long as the fully-vaccinated crew have negative tests, they can walk right off the ship into central Auckland.

The 250-strong crew of the HMCS Calgary have been given special permission from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) to skip our normal strict 14-days managed isolation (MIQ).

Britain said on Tuesday it would permanently deploy two warships in Asian waters after its Queen Elizabeth aircraft carrier and escort ships sail to Japan in September through seas where China is vying for influence with the United States and Japan.

Plans for the high-profile visit by the carrier strike group come as London deepens security ties with Tokyo, which has expressed growing alarm in recent months over China's territorial ambitions in the region, including Taiwan.

It comes a day after a coordinated series of statements from nations - including New Zealand - accusing Chinese state-sponsored actors of malicious cyber activity, including being responsible for exploiting a Microsoft Exchange earlier this year.

OPINION: Most people will only have heard of Lee Williams and his right-wing views following a highly public and widely reported confrontation with the ACT party leader David Seymour. This took place at an ACT event in Ashburton relatively recently.

Williams had been dismissed from dairy company Synlait for expressing extreme views on social media and was seeking support from Seymour on the grounds of his right to freedom of speech. In addition to working for the dairy company, Williams runs a YouTube channel that posts far-right content.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has firmly aligned New Zealand’s foreign policy with the United States’ world view, “embracing" the phrase “Indo-Pacific" to describe the region.

The US, United Kingdom, and Australia are among countries that regularly use the phrase “Indo-Pacific”, wrapping India into a strategic picture of the Asia-Pacific region as a greater counter-weight against China’s growing influence. New Zealand has been a slow adopter of the term.
