We have been to Wal's Plantlands a few times for the nursery and buying of plants, Xaria had been to " The Topiary Cafe" once or twice before in the past but it was a first time for me.

Name: The Topiary Cafe
Address: 109 Bush Road, Mosgiel
Web: https://www.walsplantland.co.nz

Upon arrival we we ask if we had a booking, and of course we didn't as this is a pretty random(ish) cafe that we choose a few hours before hand. Since apparently the most of the indoor tables were pre-booked and reserved that waitress said we only have outside seating available, and on a day like it was today we had no complaints there as we probably would have sat outside anyway.

The waitress also asked if we wanted a menu to which we replied "no we are just here for a coffee and something from the cabinet" as part of our criteria of a cafe. She said that was fine, have a look and then find a seat outside and a waitress will be over soon to take our order.

In the cabinet there were the standard scones, sausage rolls, cheese rolls and the like to which the cheese rolls were a double cheese roll.

We found a seat outside and waited to make our order. It was only a couple of minutes when the waitress came over with some glasses and a bottle of water asking if we were ready to order, which obviously we were.

Double Cheese Rolls and Sausage Roll

Standard flat white coffee, sausage roll and cheese roll for me, a soy flat white and cheese roll for Xaria.

This time the food came first. The cheese rolls had a hint of mustard in the mix which was nice and the sausage roll sauce was a sweet plum sauce (I think) We both enjoyed the rolls. Nothing really beats a good cheese roll if I am completely honest.

However we think our coffee's got lost and had finished our bite to eat and our coffee's still hadn't arrived. Xaria asked a passing waitress just to check where they were.

Any who... Our coffee's arrived and was a pretty good coffee for our tastes considering neither of us puts sugar or anything in it.

Old Tractor that kids can clamber over...

Whilst drinking our coffee we watched people play the Mini Golf course across the field, watched the rideable trains go past and round the track. They even had working warning bells and flashing lights for when the train passes over the footpath... There is also a golf driving range, so dad can be there while mum and kids are on the mini golf. They also have a small hedge maze to get lost in if one so desired. There was a separate milk bar for ice creams and milkshakes etc and in the nursery area an old tractor for kids to climb over. To the side of the cafe there was a pick up area for takeaways... which I didn't notice until we were leaving. There was also a garden giftshop, all this as well as your standard florist, garden nursery and landscaping supplies.

One of the rideable trains...

Overall a pleasant atmosphere and the staff seemed friendly and helpful.

The one thing was the waiting for a bit for our coffee's after we had finished our cheese rolls etc, and it felt odd paying for it after or as we were leaving... which is fine for a restaurant etc, but a cafe it is normally as you order. But this could well be due to Covid-19 restrictions and the cafe has had to alter the way they do things.
