The COVID-19 pandemic is the most severe global emergency the World Health Organization has ever declared, the agency's chief said late on Monday night.

Six months on since the WHO declared COVID-19 a "public health emergency of international concern", Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has warned the world the pandemic "continues to accelerate" with the total number of cases doubling in the past six weeks.

An international security expert has criticised Canterbury University (UC) over its partnership with a Chinese Institute which is closely linked to the military.

In April 2018, the University of Canterbury signed an agreement with Harbin Institute of Technology to collaborate on teaching and research.

The University of Canterbury (UC) decided to collaborate with a top Chinese university that has strong links with the Chinese military without asking about the organisation’s defence connections.

In April 2018, UC signed an agreement with Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT), based in Harbin, Weihai and Shenzhen, to collaborate on teaching and research.
