New Zealand does not have a Marine Corps. Nor, unlike Australia, does it have Army units that are habitually associated with amphibious operations. Nor, unlike Canada, has it given consideration to acquiring amphibious assault ships or forming a unit that might operate with such ships. US Marines supported the New Zealand Force integration of their recently acquired multi-role maritime patrol vessel Her Majesty's New Zealand Ship (HMNZS) Canterbury, which enhanced humanitarian assistance efforts in the region.

Project Protector was formed to acquire a Multi-Role Vessel (MRV), and Offshore and Inshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs and IPVs). The primary role of the MRV is to provide the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) with a tactical sealift capability. In addition to this role, the MRV is able to provide a response capability to contingency operations in the New Zealand EEZ and the South Pacific, conduct sea training for the Royal New Zealand Navy (RNZN) and contribute to the off shore patrol effort.

Anyone reading the media coverage of New Zealand’s defence policy statement might conclude its purpose was to lay out a stronger position on China. That would be a mistake. Its central purpose is to put defence policy into language that can be owned by the new coalition government to justify some major capability investment decisions.
