Deploying NH90 helicopters overseas is a well-rehearsed routine for the Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF), as bushfire relief operations in Australia have demonstrated.

On January 5, New Zealand Defence Minister the Honourable Ron Mark announced the deployment of three NH90s from RNZAF Base Ohakea’s No. 3 Squadron.

A firefighting chemical banned from manufacture has been repeatedly leaked from Devonport Naval Base.

The eight leaks of halon – described as a powerful global warming agent – were among nearly 150 hazardous chemical spills investigated at the Auckland base in the past decade.

Jim Rolfe’s has two main requirements. One is a comprehensive perspective – inclusive of international and domestic security challenges, inclusive of the many agencies that are part of an expanding national security community, and inclusive of the many building blocks which are already out there in existing documentation. The other is what Jim calls “overall coherence”. It’s the job of the national security strategy to connect the dots, providing guidance to agencies as they work together. An NSS for New Zealand would provide the big picture, the meta-narrative, for this collaborative effort.

New Zealand is the only Five Eyes partner without an explicit national security strategy document (although technically Canada calls their version a national security policy). Clearly our closest partners believe that some form of overarching direction is useful for determining the activities of individual agencies.

Defence Minister Ron Mark is downplaying a rocket attack near Camp Taji in Iraq as the Defence Force confirms no Kiwis were harmed.

Katyusha rockets hit roughly 3km away from the military complex - located north of Baghdad and which also hosts American forces - on Wednesday morning in an attack which local media described as "fierce". Initial reports suggested the rockets landed on the base itself.

The first two years of the Coalition government have been a pleasant surprise for those interested in defence matters.

They have a coherent defence story, particularly well set out in the 2019 Capability Plan, which builds on the work of the previous National government. They have been able to make the big multibillion-dollar procurement decisions, something that eluded the previous government. The Coalition government has even managed to gain some degree of acceptance from the Green Party about the direction of defence policy.
