A United States Navy ship will visit New Zealand in the next fortnight, it's been announced, providing an opportunity for our Defence Force (NZDF) to receive more training.

The vessel - an Arleigh Burke Class Destroyer - will berth in Wellington at some point this month, the NZDF announced on Wednesday. While on our shores, the ship's crew will train and interact with NZDF personnel, as well as take part in interoperability exercises and official engagements.

A new review of the Defence Force (NZDF) is set to shake up its processes during overseas deployments.

An expert panel set up by the Government to review the NZDF's structure, information management and record-keeping has made nine recommendations in its 93-pages report released on Monday.

A judge has rejected the New Zealand Defence Force's claim that a training exercise in which a decorated soldier died was exempt from health and safety laws.

This is in part because the training couldn't be deemed "operational" because it used US Black Hawk helicopters, which the New Zealand army does not normally have access to. The Black Hawk helicopters would therefore be unavailable for the New Zealand Defence Force to use in response to a domestic incident.

On 11 November 2021, the Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) reported that NH90-TTH with serial NZ3302 (construction number 1206) reach 2,000 flying hours. With this milestone, the RNZAF NH90 is the first in the world of this type to reach this number of flying hours.

Note from Nighthawk.NZ:

To be fair it's serial construction number 1206 ... and it is the first in the world to reach 2000 flying hours... it means the NH-90's are over worked and we don't have enough air frames to spread the work load out over the entire fleet. No something to be proud of really.

Future maritime conflict will be conducted in the grey zone. It’s a reality that New Zealand cannot ignore, and it has implications for the next generation of naval capability, writes maritime capability specialist and former Royal New Zealand Navy Officer Andrew Watts.

I once tried to explain to a very intelligent person what the Navy was for. I described how it protected our Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and Extended Continental Shelf (ECS), and that 90% of our trade by value and 99% by volume travelled in ships and thus needed to be protected, as did the 90% of our information traffic with the wider world that passes along undersea cables.
