New Zealand’s position in the South Pacific is increasingly threatened by an assertive China, and defence officials fear the construction of a military base in the region could “fundamentally alter the strategic balance”.

The dire warning about worsening regional security and global competition was contained in the latest Defence Assessment, published by the Ministry of Defence on Wednesday.

New Zealand has deployed a navy ship to the Solomon Islands to help peacekeeping efforts after political unrest in the capital, Honiara.

The decision to deploy the HMNZS Wellington to the mission was not formally announced by the Government or the Defence Force.

A sailor has escaped disciplinary action after accidentally letting off a blank round in Singapore, the Defence Force says.

The incident happened several weeks ago while the frigate HMNZS Te Kaha was abroad for exercises in the South China Sea.

The United States Marine Corps Memorial stands proudly on the waterfront of New Zealand’s capital city, Wellington, close to where the first troops came ashore in 1942. Outgoing for incoming ... Launching decoys to distract and confuse inbound sensor-guided missiles, is a key tool in a frigate’s counter-measures armoury. Both HMNZS Te Kaha and Te Mana are now fitted with the Multi Ammunition Softkill System (MASS) as part of the extensive Frigate Upgrade Programme they’ve undertaken in Canada.
