Defence Minister Ron Mark has asked the Defence Force for a national fire risk assessment to prevent a disaster like Australia's bushfires.

Mark said there was nothing to prevent large-scale blazes from also happening in New Zealand and that he had ordered the assessment shortly before Christmas.

The National Party says New Zealand troops stationed in Iraq should not "cut and run", advising the Government to keep troops on the ground.

On Wednesday, Iran launched its retaliation for the US-orchestrated killing of top Iranian general, Qassem Soleimani. More than a dozen missiles were fired at two military bases in Iraq, the complexes known to house both US and Iraqi troops.

New Zealand is set to experience drier and calmer weather than normal, according to WeatherWatch.

The North Island and parts of the South Island will feel warm sub-tropical northerly-quarter winds from Friday to Saturday, followed by a brief phase of cooler and windier weather on Sunday and Monday.

New Zealand's withdrawal from Iraq looks "inevitable" following Iranian missiles strikes against bases hosting United States troops, former Minister of Defence Wayne Mapp says.

The NZDF is, meanwhile, investigating claims New Zealand's base in Iraq has also been hit.

Some New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) personnel just deployed to Australia's bushfire crisis may be headed for biodiversity-rich Kangaroo Island, where around 155,000ha of pristine land has been scorched.

Around 100 NZDF personnel were today flown across the Tasman to help Australia battle the unprecedented fires, now burning across several states.
