Cyclone Sarai has left Kiwi tourists stranded as flights are grounded and some say they're now being charged $800 a night to stay. 

At times winds reached over 100 km/h bringing torrential rain and flooding to the island.

The state of emergency in Samoa, declared due to the measles epidemic, has ended following a special Cabinet meeting.

At Saturday's meeting, Cabinet unanimously approved the cancellation of the State of Emergency Orders in place.

Under the Residential Tenancies Amendment Act, tenants are now liable for careless damage caused to a rental property, costing them the lower of four weeks' rent, or the  landlord's insurance excess.

Tim Grafton, chief executive of the Insurance Council of NZ (ICNZ) confirmed that the cost applies regardless of whether a tenant has insurance and if not paid, the landlord can refer the case to the Tenancy Tribunal.

The Interislander ferry service has apologised after a family heading across the Cook Strait had their vehicle covered in human urine this week.

Sean Scanlon and his family were heading home from the North Island on Monday when they suffered what he describes as a "wee mistake".

The Dutch government will stop using the moniker Holland in favour of its official name the Netherlands.

From January, companies, embassies, ministries and universities will only be able to refer to the state using its legitimate title.

Two Bunnings stores in the North Island are abruptly closing before the New Year, putting about 30 to 40 jobs on the line.

The stores in Waikanae, on the Kāpiti Coast, and Te Aroha, Waikato, will shut down on Friday but First Union said workers found out about the closures only on Monday.
