US President Joe Biden is nominating former Senator Tom Udall as the next United States Ambassador to New Zealand.

The White House confirmed on Saturday (NZ time) that the former Senator for New Mexico, described in a statement as having a "long and distinguished career in public service", is Biden's pick to fill the vacant spot in Wellington. He will also take the Samoa Ambassador job.

Labour MP Louisa Wall is calling for a diplomatic boycott of the 2022 Beijing Winter Games, something parliamentarians across Europe this month also expressed support for.

More than 180 human rights groups are calling for a boycott of next February's event in protest of human rights abuses underway in the Asian nation, including the treatment of the Uighur people in Xinjiang, anti-democratic behaviour in Hong Kong and expansion in the South China Sea.

Traffic was disrupted around the country today, with convoys of tractors and utes with dogs on board arriving in dozens of centres around New Zealand, as farmers protested against government regulations.

Groundswell NZ organised the 'Howl of a Protest' in more than 40 towns and cities over recent environmental regulations, the 'ute tax' and a seasonal worker shortage.

As farmers march across the country in opposition to rural regulations, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern is standing firm on the Government's commitments.

It has now been revealed that the man fatally shot by police in Hamilton on Wednesday night had fired at officers with a military-style semi-automatic weapon.

In a video posted to his Facebook on Friday, King addressed what he says is misinformation circulating around the funding of Gumboot Friday, and urged people not to believe it.

China's President Xi Jinping will attend Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern's virtual COVID-19 APEC meeting on Friday night, according to the Chinese Foreign Ministry.

Ardern announced on Monday that for the first time in APEC history, leaders of member economies will hold an additional meeting with a focus on COVID-19 and its economic implications. She wants a discussion on "immediate measures to achieve more coordinated regional action" as well as on steps for long-term growth.
