Germany on Monday sent a warship to the South China Sea for the first time in almost two decades, joining other Western nations in expanding its military presence in the region amid growing alarm over China's territorial ambitions.
China claims swathes of the South China Sea and has established military outposts on artificial islands in the waters that contain gas fields and rich fishing.

Myanmar's military ruler Min Aung Hlaing has taken on the role of prime minister in a newly formed caretaker government, state media reported on Sunday, six months after the army seized power from a civilian government.
In a speech on Sunday, Min Aung Hlaing repeated a pledge to hold elections by 2023 and said his administration was ready to work with a future regional envoy on Myanmar.

A leading medical expert has criticised authorities' decision to allow a COVID-19 patient from Fiji to be transferred to New Zealand for treatment, saying "it's a pity" health workers here have been put at risk.
The patient, who arrived in New Zealand earlier this week, is a senior official for Fiji's United Nations (UN) Development Programme and is currently being treated at Auckland's Middlemore Hospital.
