The Marin County, California elementary school in the US had been conscientious about following Covid-19 protocols.

Masks were required indoors, desks were spaced six feet apart, and the students kept socially distant. But the Delta variant found an opening anyway.

China has vowed to retaliate if the US accuses China of leaking covid from its lab at the Wuhan Institute of Virology. China contests that the coronavirus came from Fort Detrick in Maryland, and it has some sick beats to back that claim up. According to a research lab in Canada, Apple is helping the Chinese Communist Party censor what people can write on their phones in Taiwan (sidenote: why is one of China's dead leaders on the list of forbidden terms?). And there is concern in a Michigan community that Chinese fentanyl—I mean fluoride—is being used in its drinking water. China is also exporting a lot of fentanyl to the US, although as far as we know it's not being used in drinking water. Watch this episode of China Uncensored for that and more of this week's China news headlines.

President Joe Biden, his voice breaking with emotion, vowed on Thursday the United States would hunt down those responsible for twin explosions at the Kabul airport in Afghanistan and said he asked the Pentagon to develop plans to strike back at them.

Biden spoke hours after the blasts killed at least a dozen American troops and scores of civilians, the worst day of casualties for U.S. forces there in a decade.

At least 90 Afghan civilians and 12 members of the US military have been killed in twin suicide bombings at Kabul's international airport as foreign evacuation efforts continue.

The attack comes just a day after Western nations - including New Zealand - advised citizens and visa holders on the ground to avoid Hamid Karzai International Airport due to terrorism threats. The site has become the centre point of tensions in Afghanistan, with thousands of people flocking to it with hopes of getting on an evacuation aircraft out of the country, which recently fell to the Taliban.
