It's too soon to pop the bubbly but a COVID-modeller says we're passing the peak of this outbreak.

And the good news doesn't stop there if we stay the course of this lockdown data shows we could even be in single digits by the end of next week.

All eyes were on today's numbers and with just 28 new cases the country let out a collective sigh of relief.

Finance Minister Grant Robertson said the results were encouraging but the job is not done yet.

Robertson said it is too soon to celebrate but the numbers are heading in the right direction.

COVID modeller Professor Shaun Hendy told Newshub the drop in numbers on Friday was positive, but we shouldn't get complacent.

"Going into the week we can be cautiously optimistic that we are getting on top of this outbreak," Hendy said.

But that good news comes with a warning.

"If we all go out and celebrate tonight and break our bubbles then those numbers go up."

And if you needed a reminder of how fast Delta spreads in just two and a half weeks the number of active cases has grown to 731.

Forty-three people are in hospital in Auckland with nine in ICU and three are on ventilators.

And while almost 90,000 people got vaccinated yesterday too few of them were Māori and Pasifika

John Tamihere told Newshub Māori whanau are being vaccinated at the lowest rate and the booking system is their first barrier.

"We need equality of access for vaccine opportunity," Tamihere said.

From tomorrow, Māori and Pasifika can walk into Whanau Ora clinics without an appointment.

And while vaccination rates continue to grow and case numbers decrease, Hendy says there is a new best-case scenario.

"It could be we see numbers next week in the single digits."

Worth at least a celebratory dance in our living rooms.
