The founder of the volunteer student army says young people shouldn't be forced into volunteering.

New Zealand First members have voted for the party to look into giving 100 hours of compulsory community service to all teenagers aged between 15 and 19.

Student Volunteer Army founder Sam Johnson told Mike Hosking that's not the way to go.

"It's less about looking at 100 compulsory service hours and more looking at what are particular problems we could solve with the support of volunteers in the community and what's the way to incentivise that to happen."

He says in his Year 9 and 10 volunteer projects, students have to record what they've learnt from the likes of a tree planting.

"We're seeing from that about half the students continuing on and putting in more and more volunteer hours. So you've got to have something that gets them in for a start, and
once they are in, then they can continue."
