The United States on Monday said it had completed the withdrawal of its forces from Afghanistan following a chaotic airlift nearly 20 years after it had invaded the country in the wake of the September 11, 2001, attacks on America.

More than 122,000 people have been flown out of Kabul since August 14, the day before the Taliban - which harbored the al Qaeda militant group blamed for the 2001 attacks on New York and Washington - regained control of the country.

The Chinese Communist Party is celebrating the 70th anniversary of what state-run media calls the “peaceful liberation” of Tibet. Liberation from . . . self rule? From being able to follow your customs, practice your religion, speak your own language and not be put in a re-education camp? The Tibetans must feel do indebted to the Chinese Communist Party for saving it from that awful fate.

Immunologist Graham Le Gros says New Zealand should be bringing in AstraZeneca vaccines if the Pfizer vaccine supply is running short, and there should be a drive to get as many people with one vaccination shot as soon as possible.

The Government may have to manage demand for the COVID-19 vaccine after a rush to get the jab following the latest outbreak.

The new variant, known as C.1.2, was first detected in May and has now spread to most South African provinces and to seven other countries in Africa, Europe, Asia and Oceania, according to research which is yet to be peer-reviewed.

China has forbidden under-18s from playing video games for more than three hours a week, a stringent social intervention that it said was needed to pull the plug on a growing addiction to what it once described as "spiritual opium".

The new rules, published on Monday, are part of a major shift by Beijing to strengthen control over its society and key sectors of its economy, including tech, education and property, after years of runaway growth.

The Government is possibly running out of vaccines in September and it could be their own fault.

In May Covid-19 Response Minister Chris Hipkins told Newstalk ZB that Pfizer had confirmed that New Zealand would receive 8 million doses in the third quarter, saying “we will get them all by the end of September.”
