The United States will have to "pay a price" for its diplomatic boycott of the Winter Olympics in Beijing, China said on Tuesday, just weeks after talks aimed at easing tense relations between the two sides.
The White House said on Monday U.S. government officials would boycott the Winter Olympics because of China's human rights "atrocities", although U.S. athletes were free to travel there to compete.

The Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China wants us to join America’s diplomatic boycott of the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing.
White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki announced the boycott earlier today.

New Zealand has deployed a navy ship to the Solomon Islands to help peacekeeping efforts after political unrest in the capital, Honiara.
The decision to deploy the HMNZS Wellington to the mission was not formally announced by the Government or the Defence Force.

Last month, US President Joe Biden said he was considering such a diplomatic boycott amid criticism of China's human rights record, including what Washington says is genocide against minority Muslims in its western region of Xinjiang.

A sailor has escaped disciplinary action after accidentally letting off a blank round in Singapore, the Defence Force says.
The incident happened several weeks ago while the frigate HMNZS Te Kaha was abroad for exercises in the South China Sea.

Myanmar's deposed leader Aung San Suu Kyi was jailed for four years on Monday on charges of incitement and breaching coronavirus restrictions, a source familiar with the proceedings said, in a case critics dismissed as a farce.
President Win Myint was also sentenced to four years in prison, the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said, as the court delivered its first verdicts against civilian leaders detained in a February 1 military coup.
