The family of the terrorist who attacked shoppers in Auckland say they are heartbroken by the horrible act.

Ahamed Aathill Mohamed Samsudeen, a 32-year-old refugee originally from Sri Lanka, was shot dead by undercover police after stabbing six people inside Countdown in LynnMall on Friday.

But repeated attempts to have him stripped of his refugee status were ultimately unsuccessful, hamstrung by what Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has called a "frustrating process".

Immigration authorities tried for years to deport the terrorist who was shot dead after a rampage at an Auckland supermarket, it has been revealed.

They also sought to detain Ahamed Aathill Mohamed Samsudeen while deportation was considered to keep the community safe but were prevented by the law from doing so, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said.

The 32-year-old Sri Lankan national was shot dead by police after stabbing six people inside Countdown LynnMall. A seventh person was also injured in the attack.

Ten years later, he stabbed five people and injured two others in an Isis-inspired terror attack. The terrorist who carried out a stabbing attack in LynnMall on Friday can be named as Ahamed Aathil Mohamed Samsudeen.

Seven people were injured, three critically, after Samsudeen attacked shoppers at the Countdown supermarket in west Auckland's LynnMall before 3pm on Friday. The ISIS-inspired terrorist was under surveillance by police and was shot dead by officers about two minutes after the attack began.
