China's new maritime law – in which foreign vessels will have to submit details to Chinese authorities when transiting through its 'territorial waters' – has now come into force.
In a classic manoeuvre of what is called “lawfare”, China announced a new set of maritime regulations last week that require ships carrying certain types of cargo to provide detailed information to the Chinese authorities when transiting through Chinese “territorial waters”.

There are calls for tougher measures to limit the transmission of Covid-19 between the North and South Islands, after Te Waipounamu recorded its first community case of 2021 on Saturday.
The Ministry of Health said the individual flew from Rotorua and arrived in Blenheim on October 21.

The new AUKUS defense pact between Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States will go down as one of this year’s biggest foreign policy surprises.
By contrast, the announcement of a free trade agreement (FTA) between New Zealand and the United Kingdom was expected – only the exact timing was uncertain. A former commander of an elite Afghan police unit that was trained by the New Zealand SAS is asking the Government to do more to help his comrades flee Afghanistan.
Major General Ghulam Daoud Tarakhil, who led Afghanistan’s Crisis Response Unit said CRU officers had spent years hunting “terrorists who used every means – including suicide attacks – to carry out their missions,” and were now being hunted by the Taliban.
