The man responsible for Friday afternoon's terror attack in a west Auckland supermarket can now be named as Ahamed Aathill Mohamed Samsudeen.

The 32-year-old Sri Lankan national was shot dead by police after stabbing six people inside Countdown LynnMall. A seventh person was also injured in the attack.

Ahamed Aathill Mohamed Samsudeen came to New Zealand in 2011 seeking a new life free from attack and torture. Ten years later, he stabbed five people and injured two others in an Isis-inspired terror attack. He was shot dead by police bringing an end to months of constant surveillance and years of growing concern over his extremist views. Catrin Owen reports.

Samsudeen, 32, arrived in New Zealand in 2011 from Sri Lanka on a student visa.

The Islamic State supporter who stabbed at least five shoppers in an Auckland supermarket before being shot dead can now be identified.

He was Ahamed Aathil Mohamed Samsudeen, a 32-year-old born in Sri Lanka who came to New Zealand in October 2011 and was granted refugee status two years later.

The terrorist who carried out a stabbing attack in LynnMall on Friday can be named as Ahamed Aathil Mohamed Samsudeen.

Seven people were injured, three critically, after Samsudeen attacked shoppers at the Countdown supermarket in west Auckland's LynnMall before 3pm on Friday. The ISIS-inspired terrorist was under surveillance by police and was shot dead by officers about two minutes after the attack began.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern says the Government will now overhaul terrorism laws by the end of the month, in the wake of a knife attack committed by a terrorist who was under police surveillance.

Ardern fronted a press conference on Saturday afternoon with further details about the man behind the attack, including the efforts taken by police to keep the man in custody or GPS monitored in the community, as concern about the risk he posed grew.

The former captain's steward said he had decided to speak out about his experience, because he wants other victims to know they are not alone.
