Fiji is seeking to improve trade relations with New Zealand after Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern secured a historic free trade deal with the European Union this week which will see NZ exports rise by $1.8 billion a year.

Russian forces abandoned the strategic Black Sea outpost of Snake Island on Thursday (local time), in a major victory for Ukraine that could loosen the grip of Russia's blockade on Ukrainian ports.

Russia's defence ministry said it had decided to withdraw from the outcrop as a "gesture of goodwill" to show Moscow was not obstructing UN efforts to open a humanitarian corridor allowing grains to be shipped from Ukraine.

When the British handed its colony Hong Kong to Beijing in 1997, it was promised 50 years of self-government and freedoms of assembly, speech and press that are not allowed by Chinese on the Communist-ruled mainland.

As the city of 7.4 million people marks 25 years under Beijing's rule, those promises are wearing thin. Hong Kong's honeymoon period, when it carried on much as it always had, has passed, and its future remains uncertain, determined by forces beyond its control.
