A former Afghan interpreter for the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) whose family are hiding in mountainous Bamiyan province with their children is pleading for the Government to rescue them.

The plea comes as the Defence Force issued an edict for Kiwi soldiers to stop seeking information and trying to help their trapped Afghan friends, who are fleeing in fear of the returning Taliban regime.

Armed Taliban members knocked on doors in cities across Afghanistan on Wednesday, witnesses said, telling fearful residents to return to their jobs a day after the militants announced they wanted to revive the country's battered economy.

Widespread destruction during a 20-year war between U.S.-backed government forces and the Taliban, the drop in local spending due to departing foreign troops, a tumbling currency and lack of dollars are fuelling economic crisis in the country.

As the Taliban tightens its grip on Afghanistan’s capital, there’s concern the group’s rapid takeover may result in a downward spiral for the country’s freedoms despite the organisation claiming to be more moderate.

Fighters met little resistance as they entered Kabul on Monday, quickly taking control of the presidential palace and subsequently, Afghanistan’s seat of power.

Since the withdrawal of American and NATO forces from Afghanistan in July, the Taliban have swiftly taken control of large parts of the country. The president has fled and the government has fallen.

Emboldened by their success, lack of resistance by Afghan forces and minimal international pressure, the Taliban have intensified their violence. For Afghan women, their increasing power is terrifying.

The Afghan Taliban said on Tuesday they wanted peaceful relations with other countries and would respect the rights of women within the framework of Islamic law, as they held their first official news briefing since their shock seizure of Kabul.

The Taliban announcements, short on details but suggesting a softer line than during their rule 20 years ago, came as the United States and Western allies evacuated diplomats and civilians the day after scenes of chaos at Kabul airport as Afghans thronged the airfield.
