The New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) has unveiled its new Bushmaster NZ5.5 Armoured Vehicles as it strides towards enhanced defence capabilities.

The cutting-edge vehicles are poised to revolutionise safety and efficiency on the battlefield, aligning New Zealand's military technology with global standards.

In 2020, the Labour government approved the purchase of a fleet of 43 Bushmaster vehicles to replace the New Zealand Army's armoured Pinzgauers. All are now on our shores and ready to be tested.

Soldier Henry King, who joined troops in Waiouru for a firsthand look at the Bushmaster, praised its design features.

"For starters, we have a big windscreen which is good, great visibility," he remarked. He also highlighted the improved ergonomics and spaciousness compared to previous models.

The vehicles are designed to provide high-level protection against a range of threats and can be used in peace and security operations, as well as humanitarian and disaster responses.

Each Bushmaster can accommodate up to 10 personnel, including crew and passengers, significantly enhancing the safety of those on board.

A standout feature of the Bushmaster is its V-shaped hull, engineered to redirect blasts away from the vehicle and its occupants.

"It provides significant peace of mind to our soldiers when moving around the battle space," Major James Dunningham said.

The inclusion of seats and seat belts replaces the previously used flat bench, which means a much more comfortable ride and reduced crew fatigue.

The vehicles are currently undergoing field tests, with emphasis being placed on self-recovery techniques, ensuring soldiers can navigate obstacles independently.

Lance Corporal Keereshan Gounden admired the vehicle's capabilities, noting the ongoing exploration of its full potential.

Corporal Roma Shearer described the Bushmaster as being "really easy to drive" with a user-friendly design.

The Bushmaster Armoured Vehicle signifies a significant advancement for the NZDF, promising unparalleled protection and mobility for troops in various operational environments.
