Hong Kong police arrested a former senior journalist with the Apple Daily newspaper at the international airport on Sunday night on a suspected national security charge as he tried to leave the city, according to local media reports.

Fung Wai-kong would be the seventh staffer at the pro-democracy Apple Daily newspaper to be arrested on national security grounds in recent weeks. He was an editor and columnist at the now-closed paper, local media reported.

Chinese Communist Party spies are infiltrating New Zealand universities, three lecturers in Chinese politics and history suspect.

Auckland University lecturer Dr Stephen Noakes said people who were not enrolled in his course had attended his lectures and appeared to be gathering intelligence.

The Government will phase out hard-to-recycle food packaging and some single-use plastics from late next year as part of its promise to rid the country of problem plastics by July 2025. 

The plastics to be phased out include hard-to-recycle food and drink packaging made from PVC and polystyrene, and some degradable plastic products.

The big five banks closed 84​ branches and 249​ ATMs in one year, a report from KPMG​ shows.

Overall, the entire banking sector, including smaller banks like TSB and SBS, went from 934​ retail bank branches at the end of September 2019 to 850​, and from 2465​ ATMs to 2216​ at the end of September last year.

New Zealand is pausing quarantine-free travel with all Australian states and territories from 10:30pm on Saturday night to 11:59pm on Tuesday.

It comes as the outbreak in Sydney worsens and cases are being detected elsewhere in Australia, including in Victoria and Northern Territory. New Zealand officials received new advice on Saturday evening.
