New Zealand rents have jumped to a record high after a stagnant few months.

According to the latest data from Trade Me's Rental Price Index, the national median weekly rent in June hit $545, up from $540 in March to May. Rent is also up 6.9 percent on June last year, or an increase of 8.7 percent when you take Auckland out of the mix.

The United Kingdom Royal Navy's "largest and most powerful" warship has sailed into contested South China Sea waters despite threats from Beijing it will "safeguard its sovereignty". 

The UK's Carrier Strike Group set sail in May on a seven-month deployment through the Mediterranenan, Indian Ocean and the Indo-Pacific, meant to be a symbol of "Global Britain" and the nation's desire to strengthen relations in the region.

National leader Judith Collins has unleashed on suspected terrorist Suhayra Aden, claiming she's a bad mother and part of a "death cult".

The true cost of air travel on the environment has been revealed in Boeing's annual report, which says every single jet aircraft delivered to airlines by the company this year will pump out on average emissions equivalent to one million tonnes of carbon dioxide over their expected 20 year lifespan.

The majority of Kiwis support making KiwiSaver compulsory as well as having the option to automatically increase their contributions over time, new research shows.

KiwiSaver started 14 years ago in July 2007. It's a voluntary savings scheme to help Kiwis save for their retirement. After three years, members can choose to withdraw most of their savings to buy a first home.
