The Medical Council has confirmed Jonie Girouard, the Canterbury GP Newshub filmed issuing COVID-19 vaccine medical certificate exemptions to anti-vaxxers, can no longer practise in New Zealand.

"Dr Girouard is no longer registered, therefore is unable to practise medicine in New Zealand," Medical Council chair Curtis Walker says.

A new strain of COVID-19 that combines the Delta and Omicron variants has been found in 25 cases in Cyprus, scientists say.

Leondios Kostrikis, professor of biological sciences at the University of Cyprus, says the strain is called "Deltacron" because of its Omicron-like genetic signatures in the Delta genomes, Bloomberg reports

Rising Covid-19 cases at the border are increasing the risk of the Omicron variant spreading in Aotearoa but a leading epidemiologist says the country still has time to prepare for an outbreak.

Today there were 43 Covid-19 cases identified at the border, a jump from 23 cases yesterday, and the Ministry of Health believes the majority are Omicron.
