Future maritime conflict will be conducted in the grey zone. It’s a reality that New Zealand cannot ignore, and it has implications for the next generation of naval capability, writes maritime capability specialist and former Royal New Zealand Navy Officer Andrew Watts.
I once tried to explain to a very intelligent person what the Navy was for. I described how it protected our Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and Extended Continental Shelf (ECS), and that 90% of our trade by value and 99% by volume travelled in ships and thus needed to be protected, as did the 90% of our information traffic with the wider world that passes along undersea cables.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has issued a warning to Asia Pacific nations not to "relapse into the confrontation and division of the Cold War era" during his APEC address.
The President was the second world leader after Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern to speak at the APEC CEO Summit, hosted in Auckland. Media were alerted late on Wednesday night that Xi Jinping would speak in the opening session.

A major police operation has uncovered an alleged drug syndicate that imported millions of dollars’ worth of cocaine from Colombia.

MPs have passed a law to make older migrants, and New Zealanders who spent large portions of their lives overseas, wait longer to qualify for NZ Super.
Currently, NZ Super is paid to people aged 65 or over who have been “resident and present” in New Zealand for 10 years after the age of 20, with five of those years being after the age of 50.
