There is a suspected case of coronavirus in New Zealand, the Ministry of Health has confirmed.

 The case was now being tested, Director-General of Health Ashley Bloomfield said on Friday, nut declined to provide further information.

The Ministry of Health says Friday morning's announcement of a global health emergency over the coronavirus outbreak won't change the way they've been handling it to date.

So far 212 people have been killed by 2019-nCov, all in China, while 8000 have been infected - most in China, but cases have been reported in Germany, the US and Japan.

One person in Auckland now "fits the criteria" for a suspected case of coronavirus.

Director-General of Health Ashley Bloomfield announced on Friday the person is being tested and is in isolation in Auckland Hospital.
