A senior Chinese diplomat has warned a New Zealand audience that Australia will not only acquire nuclear-powered submarines in the coming decades, but nuclear weapons.

And it was claimed Australia’s purchase of nuclear-powered submarines would mean “more nuclear arms race ... more nuclear tests, and nuclear pollution” in the Pacific.

Getting a Pfizer booster jab five months after a second dose reduces a person’s risk of hospitalisation with Covid-19 by 93 per cent, according to new research in The Lancet.

The study from the Clalit Research Institute in Tel Aviv and Harvard University in the US is the first nationwide analysis of booster jab effectiveness and involved 1.5 million Israelis.

The Government has announced a new Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) and will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 50 percent by 2030.

The announcement comes on the eve of the United Nations climate conference in Glasgow - COP26 - where world leadings will meet to discuss issues surrounding climate change.

While New Zealand is dealing with its own COVID-19 Delta outbreak, a new variant has arrived on Australia's shores.

The Delta Plus variant was detected in a quarantine hotel in Sydney and officially reported on Saturday. The variant, which is an offshoot of Delta, is formally known as AY.4.2 and includes some new mutations affecting the spike protein which the virus uses to penetrate cells.

The National Party is calling for a Royal Commission of Inquiry into a lack of preparation for the Delta variant of COVID-19 arriving on New Zealand's shores.

It comes after 160 new community cases of COVID-19 were reported on Saturday - the worst day of daily infections since the pandemic began.

New Zealand is one step closer to reaching the 90 percent goal for people fully vaccinated against COVID-19 after the Ministry of Health announced the country had reached 75 percent on Saturday. 

The Ministry of Health announced the landmark in their press release to announce the daily cases on Sunday.
