New Zealand risks giving China coercive power over its economy, according to an American general and former US national security advisor.
General H.R. McMaster, who served as President Donald Trump's national security advisor, said New Zealanders often talked about not wanting to be caught in the middle of a scrap between America and China. The real choice for New Zealand, however, was between "sovereignty and servitude", he said.

Defence Minister Peeni Henare says he will not slash the Government’s plans to spend billions on military hardware in the coming decades, but instead the projects will be pushed further into the future.
Henare has for months signalled the Government would be looking to redraw the former defence minister Ron Mark’s Defence Capability Plan due to the cost of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Here we go again... sounds good that not going to cut back on the Defence Capability Plan 2019. (the spending of the 20 billion over 15years on defence over and above of the defence budget).
But what they are doing is moving it further into the future... in essence cutting it back on their watch. Much of the equipment that needs and will need replacing are already past the replacement date ... are they saying replacement of the frigates now to 2040-2045. Are they saying replacing the Seaprites 2035 instead of 2028.Some things just won't last that long. Take the seasprites as an example. They are an old design spare parts are already getting harder to get and with more decks that require the helo that is more flying hours ... The are pushing to it keeping them flying up to 2028...
In essence cutting it back on their watch.
