Hundreds of thousands of people will die of tuberculosis left untreated because of disruption to healthcare systems in poor countries caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, a global aid fund said.

In a few of the world's poorest countries, excess deaths from AIDS and tuberculosis (TB) could even exceed those from the coronavirus itself, said the head of the Geneva-based aid body, known as the Global Fund.

Top vaccine experts have been blindsided by confirmation Novavax has firmed as the favourite to be used in next year’s mass Covid-19 booster programme with no strong evidence confirming New Zealanders will need a third vaccine dose.

Fran Priddy​, the clinical evaluation director at Malaghan Institute and Vaccine Alliance Aotearoa New Zealand’s clinical director, only found out through Stuff that 5.36 million courses of Novavax vaccine, which is yet to gain Medsafe approval, are due early next year, likely as part of a mass booster programme.

New figures show housing affordability continues to worsen, with house price growth still surging despite Government regulation.

The latest data from CoreLogic's Housing Affordability report, published every six months, reveals New Zealand's average property value is nearly eight times higher than the average annual household income - the highest since CoreLogic started collecting such figures.
