New Zealand is well prepared for the discovery of new coronavirus variants that may be resistant to vaccines, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said on Friday, including the strain currently spreading in South Africa.

"All of our planning around COVID, we have built into it the possibility of variants in the future," Ardern said in an interview for the upcoming Reuters Next.

A person with Covid-19 has died, while seventy-seven people are in hospital with the virus, eight in ICU, as New Zealand health officials also grapple with news of a new variant overseas.

The Ministry of Health also announced on Saturday that there are 145 new community cases of Covid-19 in New Zealand.

A Kiwi epidemiologist is urging calm over the emergence of the 'Omicron' variant of COVID-19, saying there's no solid proof it's as bad as the headlines would have us believe - yet.

First discovered in South Africa thanks to its sophisticated virus-tracking infrastructure, Omicron appears to have taken two weeks to displace the highly infectious Delta variant. It has many more mutations too - including on the spike protein - linked to increased transmissibility and raising concerns it could render vaccines less effective.

Our plan to reopen to the world next year could be scuppered by the new 'Omicron' variant that's been found in southern Africa, one of New Zealand's top experts says.

The Government earlier this week said managed isolation and quarantine (MIQ) would be phased out for fully vaccinated Kiwis over January and February, and for international visitors from the end of April.

A newly identified coronavirus variant that has spread in South Africa is the most concerning that British health officials have yet seen as it has double the number of mutations of the Delta variant, including some associated with evading immune response.

The UK announced it was temporarily banning flights from South Africa and five other countries from 1200 GMT on Friday and returning British travellers from those destinations would have to quarantine.

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg warned Russia Friday (local time) that any attempt to invade Ukraine would have costs, as concern mounts about a Russian military buildup near its former Soviet neighbour's borders.

Ukraine says Moscow kept about 90,000 troops near their common border following massive war games in western Russia earlier this year. The Ukrainian Defence Ministry said units of the Russian 41st army remain near Yelnya, about 260km north of the border.
