A former New Zealand soldier fighting for Ukraine in the war against Russia has been sentenced to 14 years in jail by a Russian court.

Jordan O'Brien was sentenced in absentia for what the Russians said was fighting "as a mercenary" and participating in hostilities "for material reward".

Navy Commander Bronwyn Heslop, under investigation for three months over concerns raised about her conduct, will return to duties in January, the Defence Force has said.

Stuff revealed in September that Heslop was off work while an investigation was carried out and Commander Martin Walker was in interim command of the HMNZS Canterbury.
