ANALYSIS: The news that the lockdown will continue – another week for Aucklanders and at least four days for everyone else – should not come as a surprise. The Government’s goal is elimination and there was clearly a risk the virus could have been carried to the South Island, or anywhere else for that matter.

A Taliban representative has heaped praise on New Zealand after the Government gave $3 million in aid to organisations assisting the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan. 

Abdul Qahar Balkhi from the Taliban's Cultural Commission spoke to Al Jazeera's Charlotte Bellis - a Kiwi - about New Zealand's humanitarian profile, during the first sit-down interview with the militant group since it took back control of Afghanistan.

An interpreter who worked for the New Zealand Defence Force in Afghanistan says time to leave is running out, with reports of the Taliban going door-to-door looking for those who worked with the government.

Basir Ahmad is in hiding in Kabul. He and 34 others from the Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) have been promised a flight out.

The discussion about ‘grey zone’ security threats is a fascinating one. I would argue that these threats represent an opportunity for defence to play the leading role in a new whole-of-government approach that feels overdue already.

It’s a timely discussion, I believe, with plenty of discourse (including in these pages recently) about the possibilities offered in the new information domain. It’s also very timely as the government considers – or at least should be considering – new ways of ensuring that the NZDF and Ministry of Defence are viewed as serious players in defending this nation’s interests.
