Chinese birth control policies could cut between 2.6 to 4.5 million births of the Uyghur and other ethnic minorities in southern Xinjiang within 20 years, up to a third of the region's projected minority population, according to a new analysis by a German researcher.

The report, shared exclusively with Reuters ahead of publication, also includes a previously unreported cache of research produced by Chinese academics and officials on Beijing's intent behind the birth control policies in Xinjiang, where official data shows birth-rates have already dropped by 48.7% between 2017 and 2019.

OPINIONNuclear power has lower carbon emissions than coal-fired electricity, but nuclear produces toxic waste that must be stored for centuries. This risks an environmental disaster.

Wind turbines are also low carbon but face another issue – the massive blades made of composites need replacement every 10 to 20 years. They cannot be recycled, repurposed or even crushed by a bulldozer.

New Zealand's evolving foreign policy – especially with China – is put under the microscope by international analyst Geoffrey Miller, who says it's important to consider the wider trends and not just the latest twist in the story.

This week's meeting between Jacinda Ardern and Scott Morrison in Queenstown was yet another opportunity to judge the state of New Zealand's relationship with China.

It added to 2021's ever-growing list.

New Zealand will always be "predictable" in its dealings with China.

That's a promise from the Prime Minister who's flatly rejecting the most recent accusations from Beijing, as the dust settles from this week's trans-Tasman leaders' meeting.

China lashed out at the joint Australia - New Zealand statement as "irresponsible" and a "gross interference" in its internal affairs, and as containing "baseless allegations".
