Protests against the Taliban's takeover in Afghanistan have spread to more cities, including the capital Kabul, while the militant group called on the country's imams to urge unity at Friday prayers, the first since they seized control.

Several people were killed when the militants fired on a crowd in Asadabad in the eastern province of Kunar, a witness said. Another witness reported gunshots near a rally in Kabul, but they appeared to be Taliban firing into the air.

In 2001 the Labour-led government decided to send troops to Afghanistan. Four months later, the then-Associate Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Matt Robson made a pledge “to ensure a return to democracy”.

A former Afghan interpreter for the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) whose family are hiding in mountainous Bamiyan province with their children is pleading for the Government to rescue them.

The plea comes as the Defence Force issued an edict for Kiwi soldiers to stop seeking information and trying to help their trapped Afghan friends, who are fleeing in fear of the returning Taliban regime.

Two experts spoken to by Stuff said it was very likely the Government would extend the level 4 settings for at least the weekend, as much about the size of the cluster was still not known.

ANALYSIS: When Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announces the new alert levels at 3pm on Friday, it will be astonishing if level 4 is not extended across the country.

In our newly acquired lingo around Covid-19, there is often talk of cases ‘downstream’ or ‘upstream’ of the initial case in the community. Upstream refers to cases closer to the source of the infection – sometimes called the index or primary case – while ‘downstream’ refers to people that may have been in contact with infectious cases we know about and have or could subsequently get infected.

This is so typical of the Greens. NZ Green MP Golriz Ghahraman was recently wanting budget cut backs for the NZDF. Now look at her.... Golriz is now wanting to double our efforts... lucky we didn't make those cut backs now isn't....
