The Crown previously tried to use anti-terror laws against the Isis sympathiser shot dead by police following a knife attack at a West Auckland supermarket – but it was turned down by the courts.

The man was facing charges of possessing a hunting knife and possessing objectionable publications that included Isis videos of extreme violence, and the Crown sought to also have him charged under the Terror Suppression Act, claiming he was planning a “knife attack”.

A third student is being investigated by police after she flew out of Covid-hit Auckland without permission – further emphasising the possibility numerous other rule breakers might have exploited lax airport security and slipped out of the city during lockdown.

The Te Herenga Waka–Victoria University student travelled to Wellington on Wednesday afternoon, just hours before changes to security at Auckland Airport were announced.

After the Taliban seized Afghanistan last month, the militant group made a point of issuing conciliatory words.

On 17 August, spokesman Suhail Shaheen spoke of a “new chapter” in the country, and a desire to provide its people with “prosperous lives”.

Later that day, another Taliban spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, claimed at a press conference that anyone who “fought against us” – as well as the interpreters and contractors who supported Allied efforts over the past 20 years – would be pardoned.
