It's one of several COVID solutions that Sir Ian Taylor is trialling on a trip to the US and he's hoping the Government will take notice.

Experts say it is “not desirable” to ease Covid-19 restrictions in Auckland, amid concerns that contact tracing and our hospitals are seeing strain.

This afternoon, Cabinet will review its in-principle decision to move Auckland to step 2 of the phased alert level 3 restrictions from 11.59pm Tuesday, November 9.

Counties Manukau District Health Board (DHB) has reached 90 percent first doses of the COVID-19 vaccine, bringing Auckland closer to moving to the traffic light system.

Data released by the Ministry of Health earlier on Sunday showed the DHB had to vaccinate just 192 more eligible people to reach the 90 percent first dose target.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern welcomed signs from the United States of a bigger engagement in the Indo-Pacific region, saying in an interview with US television her Government has "mature" ties with China that allow for disagreement.

Ardern will host an online summit next week of leaders from the Asia-Pacific, including the United States, China and Japan, to discuss how the region can recover from the COVID-19 pandemic and the ensuing economic crisis.
