A group of English-speaking nations is taking a more confrontational approach to Beijing

As a general rule, it is a good idea to be wary of people who bang on about the “Anglosphere”. In Britain, it is an idea that has a strong whiff of imperial and second world war nostalgia about it. The notion harks back to Winston Churchill, who wrote a four-volume History of the English-speaking Peoples.

OTTAWA -- The Department of National Defence says the first of 15 new warships being built for the Royal Canadian Navy will be delivered years later than expected as officials working on the $60-billion project grapple with unexpected design and construction challenges.

The delay means Canada will need to spend more on its 12 aging Halifax-class frigates to keep them floating longer, and is sure to set off a fresh wave of debate and lobbying around what amounts to the largest military procurement in Canadian history.

The rise of the CANZUK concept coincides with recent global events such as Brexit and the protectionist Buy America policy. Political elites from potential member states are far from dismissing the concept, which might bring into being a powerful economic bloc rivalling the European Union, China, and the United States.

CANZUK is a novel idea based on the creation of a new free trading bloc between the countries of Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom. The idea for CANZUK is not entirely new, but it has taken on a new dynamism given recent world events involving these four countries. In the context of this new enthusiasm, there has been a push to explain what a CANZUK agreement would look like and a website devoted to its promotion.
