The career diplomat U.S. President Joe Biden named to lead the Central Intelligence Agency is creating a high-level unit aimed at sharpening the agency's focus on China, at a time of tense relations between the world's two largest economies.

CIA Director William Burns said on Thursday that the China Mission Center would cut across "all of the agency's mission areas," noting the CIA's concern was "the threat ...from the Chinese government, not its people."

China seems set to change the way it relates to Pacific nations.

This much is evident from a study showing a dramatic fall in aid spending, in terms of grants and low cost loans, over the past several years.

It's too early to say if amalgamation is on the cards for the country's 78 councils, but the way New Zealand's towns and cities are run is poised for overhaul, to replace an under-pressure local government system.

An independent review has found a swathe of issues in the sector including not enough funding and capacity, poor cohesion and collaboration, low diversity, mistrust between local and central government, and high demands on iwi and Māori without wellbeing outcomes.

ANALYSIS: China has been flying a record number of military aircrafts into Taiwan’s “air defence identification zone” in recent days, heightening regional concerns about the risk of military escalation or even an outright war.

Taiwanese people are largely alert, but not alarmed. So, why are the Taiwanese not losing their minds over what seems to be intensifying “drums of war”?

Note from Nighthawk.NZ:
I am going to be blunt... This falls on your hands Jacinda... your hands... you had ample time to get them out and didn't. You fumbled about with your weak arsed "Defence Minister" and misguided inexperienced "Minister of Foreign Affairs" flouting about wasting time. Time was the one thing you didn't have. You were more worried about making sure you say the right thing but not doing the right thing.

This is the second interpreter that we know that has been killed by the Taliban. The blood is on your hands, and your hands alone. You could have got them out earlier this year but you didn't. Why? How many more?

How many more? There is a saying most armed forces have and being ex navy it still stands true to me... No one left behind. They helped our troops... why didn't you help them. Jacinda, You make me sick. You are a hack.

And when you did make a move it was far too little, far too late. Why not send 2nd C-130, and a 757... oh were they broken and only one flyable? And we can't blame the armed forces but you as government that supplies their equipment, they do the best they can with what they are given.

You don't take defence seriously enough, you are a typical talker and do nothing politician with your "Oh I push back on that with we just upgraded the frigates and doing.. blah blah blah." Bullocks and again too little, too late. Start taking defence seriously.
