A major police operation has uncovered an alleged drug syndicate that imported millions of dollars’ worth of cocaine from Colombia.

Eight people, including two dairy workers from rural Canterbury, have been arrested as part of the National Organised Crime Group and Customs operation, believed to be one of New Zealand’s biggest cocaine busts.

MPs have passed a law to make older migrants, and New Zealanders who spent large portions of their lives overseas, wait longer to qualify for NZ Super.

Currently, NZ Super is paid to people aged 65 ​or over who have been “resident and present” in New Zealand for 10 ​years after the age of 20​, with five of those years being after the age of 50​.

Chinese military forces are holding exercises near Taiwan in response to a visit by a US congressional delegation to the island.

The drills in the area of the Taiwan Strait are a “necessary measure to safeguard national sovereignty", China's Defence Ministry said in an announcement Tuesday (local time) that gave no details on the timing, participants and location of the exercises.

The Government will make the AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine available for a small group of people, officials have announced.

New Zealand has an advance purchase agreement for 7.6 million doses of the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine – one of four the Government put its hand up for, alongside Pfizer/BioNTech, Janssen and Novavax.

Covid-19 Minister Chris Hipkins says Kiwis need to realise that the virus will not be kept in Auckland forever.

He told media on Wednesday that the Government was not committed to keeping the virus locked up in the city endlessly, so it would likely reach much of the country in coming months.
