The man in charge of modelling the spread of Covid-19 in New Zealand says the lockdown should be extended by at least two weeks.

University of Auckland professor Shaun Hendy said an extension could result in New Zealand eliminating the virus completely.

Well here we are, nearly at the end of our country's first ever lockdown. 4 weeks or 289 days that at times have passed as slowly as a glacier but not seems to be tripping merrily towards a new phase of existence on this planet.

For me this lockdown has provided everything it said on the box. It has been just as good and just as bad as we were told to expect at the beginning.

New Zealand has recorded 1422 cases of COVID-19, but this week saw the number of recovered cases surpass those that are still active.

Broken down, 1094 are confirmed COVID-19 cases, while 328 are probable. There are currently 20 people in hospital, with three people in intensive care. Two of those are in a critical condition.

New Zealand's COVID-19 death toll remains at 11, with no more reported at Saturday's daily update.

Forgoing its regular daily press conference, the Ministry of Health said in a statement at 1:15pm there are 13 more cases of the deadly disease in New Zealand, bringing the total to 1422.
