Fiji is seeking to improve trade relations with New Zealand after Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern secured a historic free trade deal with the European Union this week which will see NZ exports rise by $1.8 billion a year.

New Zealand has secured a free trade agreement with the European Union, estimated to be worth $1.8 billion annually when it’s fully implemented.

It will remove 91% of tariffs as soon as the deal is actioned, worth an estimated $100 million just in duties savings.

China has labelled Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern's comments about Beijing's growing assertiveness "misguided accusations" and warned they won't help the two countries keep their relationship on "the right track".

In a statement on Thursday night, a spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy in New Zealand said representatives had taken note of Ardern's remarks at the NATO leaders' summit in Madrid, Spain.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and President of the European Union Ursula von der Leyen unveiled the details in Brussels, but it was touch and go as to whether a good enough deal could be agreed.

Russian forces abandoned the strategic Black Sea outpost of Snake Island on Thursday (local time), in a major victory for Ukraine that could loosen the grip of Russia's blockade on Ukrainian ports.

Russia's defence ministry said it had decided to withdraw from the outcrop as a "gesture of goodwill" to show Moscow was not obstructing UN efforts to open a humanitarian corridor allowing grains to be shipped from Ukraine.
