A staff member from Middlemore Hospital has been placed in quarantine as a precaution, after a “PPE protocol incident” during the management of a Covid-19 patient who arrived in the country from Fiji Thursday last night.
The Ministry of Health confirmed Friday night that the hospital worker promptly reported the incident and was moved into a quarantine facility after they were unable to easily self-isolate at home.

An intensive care clinician says the Ministry of Health has not been upfront with the public about the risks associated with the transfer of a COVID-positive patient from Fiji to New Zealand.
Newshub has learned intensive care clinicians told their bosses they did not want the patient transferred to New Zealand. The clinicians opposed the seriously ill worker being transferred for treatment on both ethical and safety grounds, and attempted to stop the process.

Chinese state media have issued a fresh warning to the United Kingdom as its warships sail through the South China Sea, but British experts doubt "direct confrontation" is likely.
The UK's HMS Queen Elizabeth is currently leading a flotilla of warships through the contested waters as part of a seven-month deployment through the Mediterranenan, Indian Ocean and the Indo-Pacific. It's movement through the South China Sea is meant to be a "freedom of navigation" exercise as Britain uses the voyage to assert its presence in the Indo-Pacific.

New Zealand rents have jumped to a record high after a stagnant few months.
According to the latest data from Trade Me's Rental Price Index, the national median weekly rent in June hit $545, up from $540 in March to May. Rent is also up 6.9 percent on June last year, or an increase of 8.7 percent when you take Auckland out of the mix.
