The Government has announced the recommended dates for the Matariki public holiday for the next 30 years, in the hope it will give communities and businesses more certainty.
As promised prior to their re-election last October, a stand-alone bill formally establishing the new public holiday will be introduced to Parliament later this year. People will have the opportunity to provide their feedback during the select committee process.

China President Xi Jinping on Thursday hailed a "new world" created by the country's people as China's Communist Party marked the centenary of its founding, and warned foreign forces attempting to bully the nation will "get their heads bashed".
In an hour-long televised address from Tiananmen Square after watching fighter jets form a "100" in a flyby, Xi pledged to build up China's military, committed to the "reunification" of Taiwan, and stressed the autonomy held by Hong Kong and Macau.

Growth in property values slowed in 12 of the country's 18 biggest markets last month, with three showing a drop in value, the latest CoreLogic figures show.
In Auckland, property values grew 1.5 percent in June - 5.3 percent over the last quarter - the average value now sitting at $1.283 million. But quarterly growth is down from it's February quarter peak of 7.4 percent.

New Zealand's national average asking house price is up more than 20 percent over the last year, new figures show, with 15 regions hitting record highs in June.
The housing market has defied the usual winter slump, with realestate.co.nz reporting the national average asking price has risen sharply to $875,197 from $841,816 in May. It's also up 20.2 percent from $728,328 in June 2020. Fifteen of 19 regions hit record highs last month.
