Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and Director-General of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield have announced from midnight Wednesday New Zealand's alert levels will shift down.

Auckland will move down to level 2 and the rest of the country will move to level 1. These alert levels will be reviewed again by Cabinet next week.

With Britain having officially left the EU, a new agreement between Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the U.K., referred to as CANZUK, has gained traction.

A report advocating CANZUK was submitted to New Zealand’s Parliament in early January after support for the idea polled at 82 per cent. This follows a string of endorsements from the ACT party in New Zealand, Andrew Scheer, Canada’s former leader of the opposition, and Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

By the end of Wednesday, Aucklanders may be freed from the alert level 3 lockdown or required to continue life under the strict measures as officials grapple with the COVID-19 situation.

Cabinet will meet in the afternoon to consider the latest data, including the results of outstanding close contact tests. These will signal if there has been any onward transmission from the three infected cases, while wider community testing should reveal any undetected parallel transmission.
