Parts of New Zealand could hit 37C by early next week as a blistering-hot blast of air moving across from Australia sends temperatures soaring.

WeatherWatch says the heatwave will see most parts of the country kick off February even hotter than how they left January.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has announced that the general election will be held on September 19.

The announcement was made at the Beehive in Wellington, during at the first post-cabinet press conference of 2020, after Ardern advised the Governor-General.

US President Donald Trump has offered China "any help that is necessary" to control a coronavirus outbreak that has killed 81 people and left tens of millions stranded on the biggest holiday of the year.

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang will "inspect and direct" efforts to control the outbreak and promised reinforcements, as provincial authorities faced accusations they failed to respond in time.
