Former Defence Minister Wayne Mapp forecasts a decline in NZDF deployments over the next three years, and less money to spend. For the time being, he writes, deployments and spending should be targeted closer to home.
The final withdrawal of NZDF personnel from Afghanistan will take place this May. By then New Zealand will have fewer NZDF personnel on overseas deployment than at any time over the last 25 years. It is therefore timely to look ahead for the next three years, being the current term of this government.

A senior police officer in the Hawke’s Bay Organised Crime Unit has let rip at the government’s funding of a meth rehab programme being run by Mongrel Mob members, which was approved by the prime minister.
The Kahukura programme, which serves up to 10 participants over eight weeks on a marae in central Hawke’s Bay, has received $2.75m from the Proceeds of Crime fund.

A managed isolation and quarantine (MIQ) guest with COVID-19 has been transferred from an Auckland quarantine facility to hospital.
Responding to a query about the guest, a spokesperson for the Counties Manukau DHB (CMDHB) on Friday told Newshub "we currently have two patients from managed isolation in the hospital", with both in a stable condition.

Newshub can reveal nearly $2 million has been transferred to the Government over the past decade from those who have died without a will.
The largest amount, $1.028 million, was transferred to the Government's coffers in 2017, while a more modest $13,390 was handed over in 2018. In the last two years, there has been no money passed on.

India has announced several of its Navy warships will soon sail through the South China Sea, the latest country to send vessels towards the contested waters.
The Indian Defence Ministry on Tuesday announced a "Task Force of Indian Navy's Eastern Fleet" will set sail in August to South East Asia, the South China Sea and into the Western Pacific. The fleet comprises a number of warships, with at least three ships built in India and "equipped with a versatile array of weapons and sensors".
