There was a call for peace outside the Russian Embassy in Wellington on Friday as Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern joined the chorus of condemnation.

"By choosing to pursue this entirely avoidable path an unthinkable number of innocent lives will be lost because of Russia's decision," she said.

The United Nations Security Council has failed in its attempts to condemn the invasion after Russia used its veto powers.

Countries are reluctant to send their own troops to Ukraine, preferring more sanctions, as the conflict is fast becoming a refugee crisis.

With the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Vladimir Putin has overstepped an important line. The west sat by and did little when Russia invaded Georgia in 2008 and annexed Crimea in 2014. But the full-scale invasion of Ukraine that is currently underway is impossible to ignore. Putin's actions and his justifications cast serious doubt over the possibility of any kind of credible diplomacy with Russia at this stage of the conflict.

Earlier on Thursday, Foreign Minister Nanaia Mahuta condemned Russia's actions and said she would provide another update.
